There is a great need for "affordable housing" in Manatee County. The issue is WHERE it is built. Multi--story buildings should be compatible with and compliment their neighborhoods. The current residential 4.5-6 (Future Land Use 9/acre) is appropriate for Historic Oneco. For more information click here:
To preserve the history and unique character of Historic Oneco "at the top of the hill" in Manatee County.
OUR WORK IN THE 1990s
In the 1990s State Road 70 was widened from two lanes into a six lane divided highway. The FDOT's original plan for the alignment created dangerous conditions for Oneco Elementary School and Oneco United Methodist Church. A historic oak tree was to be removed as well as the School Zone Flashing lights. Citizens for Historic Oneco rallied the community and a win-win plan was realized when the FDOT kept the original southern boundary of the road saving much of the church property and historic tree. The FDOT was still going to remove the school slow down zone but the lights stayed after several meetings noting the dangers of speeding traffic with children walking to school. *
*NOTE: In 2023 the SR 70 School Zone lights were again removed without notice. This group is working with local officials and others to see that they are reinstated.
Another accomplishment in the 1990s was the construction of more sidewalks around the streets leading up to Oneco Elementary School. There were gaps in where the children could walk to school. This group help meetings with county officials and saw that the sidewalks were built which greatly improved the safety of walkers.
PRESERVING THE CHARACTER OF HISTORIC ONECO
- 2022 - NO CIRCUS IN HISTORIC ONECO
A developer applied to rezone the former Oneco Glass & Mirror property near the railroad track to put in a circus arena that could host R-Rated performances. This group rallied the neighbors, churches and schools and the Manatee County Board of County Commissioners. unanimously voted it down.
- 2023 Apartment Complex 18th St. Ct. E. This group brought to the attention of the county officials that a developer was planning to build several 3 story buildings on a sub-standard road on a site that has been reported to be an undocumented landfill. Though commissioners approved the preliminary site plan, to date no final site plan as been approved and no required environmental assessments have been made public. It appears this project has hit a snag. The community fears there could be contamination exposure if this site is developed.
